Milton S. Hershey

Ask anyone which chocolate brand first comes to mind, and the most likely answer will be Hershey’s. This famous chocolate brand is the creation of famous business leader Milton S. Hershey.

Like many fledgling businesses, Hershey’s venture was not entirely successful at the start until he perfected his chocolate recipe.

The Hershey Chocolate Company now holds the title of being the largest chocolate manufacturer in the world in terms of brand name, sales, and factory size.

Milton S. Hershey – Bittersweet Adventures

An only child, Milton Hershey was raised on a small farm near Derry Church, Pennsylvania. His family’s move from one place to another made it impossible for him to pursue his studies beyond the fourth grade.

To make him productive, his mother sent him to work for a candy maker in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After his apprenticeship in 1876, he founded his own candy business in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, the business ceased operations after six years.

Unfazed by failure, Hershey continued his passion for candy-making and perfected his recipe in 1883, producing caramels and other candy varieties.

It was in the same year when he established Lancaster Caramel Company. He purchased chocolate manufacturing equipment during his visit to the 1893 Columbian Exposition. It was also at this time that he introduced chocolate as part of his product line. He realized the huge potential of chocolate and decided to sell his Caramel manufacturing company. He used the proceeds from the sale to build a chocolate factory in his hometown, now known as Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The Hershey Chocolate Company is famous for its little cone-shaped chocolates, Hershey’s Kisses, which it introduced in 1907. Several years later, more and more chocolate factories were built, one of which was located in Oakdale, California, and is now considered as the biggest chocolate factory in the world.

Hershey’s chocolates became so famous that the company did not need to advertise. It was only during the 1970s when the Hershey Chocolate Company began to advertise. The Hershey’s chocolate empire now holds a chain of hotels, resorts, theme amusement parks, and entertainment properties.
