How To Create & Maintain Strong Employee Relations

Your employees should be viewed as part of your team. Respecting your employees and acknowledging that they are people with ideas, feelings, wants, and personal lives will establish a mutual respect.

Training:

When you’re training your employees, keep in mind: they are learning and probably nervous. Here are some pointers you may want to keep in mind:

  • Never train your employees during rush hours; it’s hard enough learning something new. When they have been on the job long enough, they will be able to operate more efficiently.
  • Be open to new ideas. Because the trainees are new to the job, they may see things in a way you haven’t.
  • Train your employees so they feel they are a part of the business. Let them know their jobs are important, and they are important to your business.
Getting Your Employees to Do Their Best:

The better your employees understand and do their jobs, the more your business prospers. It’s my opinion that to achieve the most dedication possible from your employees, you have four of the following choices:

Choice 1: Become the Employee:

Do everything yourself. You’ve heard the old saying, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” This may work in some businesses, but it is impossible in most cases.

Choice 2: Give Shares:

When employees own part of the company or shares in the company, they are dedicated. They want the business to succeed just as much as you do.

Choice 3: Get Involved:

This option is time-consuming on your part, but effective. It involves you and the employee working together on projects and tasks. It requires your personal involvement with the employees.

With your involvement, the employees will feel the need to put in the effort and will feel they are important contributors to the business. It is a satisfying feeling to have contributed and to be recognized.

Choice 4: Give Incentives:

The most effective incentives are personalized and valuable ones. Giving generic incentives to all your employees can make them feel less valued as individuals. Incentives should have value to the person receiving them.

Keep in mind that: incentives do not have to be materialistic, but they should be specific. Detail the job and performance that lead to an incentive.

You can come up with many incentives to motivate employees. I will give you some ideas for incentives in three different categories. These are just some ideas. Using your creativity, you can come up with thousands more.

Personalized Incentives:
  • A recognition plaque.
  • Recognition in the company newsletter.
  • Recognition in a local paper.
  • A thank you card.
  • A thank you phone call.
  • Recognition on the company bulletin board.
  • Recognition on the company web website
Cash Incentives:

Cash incentives are good ways to motivate employees, but keep in mind: sometimes employees will expect cash incentives for extra work or a job well done.

Examples:

  • Give a percentage of the profit or savings on a job.
  • Give a percentage of the extra production.
  • Give an extra commission.
  • offer travel expenses.
  • offer first class travel.
  • offer a set amount of cash, e.g. $25, $50, $100, for each goal reached.
Leisure Incentives:

Leisure incentives are a way of saying, “Thanks for a good job. You deserve a break. Have some fun.”

A good way to find out what the employees enjoy is to look in their resumes. They should have their interests listed. Examples of leisure incentives include:

  • Tickets to a social event, theater, or sports event.
  • Expense paid trip.
  • Dinner, lunch, breakfast.
  • Membership to a health club.
  • Paid time off.
