Important Questions To Be Asked About Your Business

Have you ever really sat down and analyzed why you are in business? What is it that you really want from it?

1. Are you in the right business?

This may seem like a pointless question, but it is a legitimate one. Are you happy with what you’re doing? If not, wouldn’t you do much better at something you love doing? By working with something you love, you will find the persistence to make it work. You’ll enjoy finding ways to improve your business.

If you don’t love your business, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” What would it take to turn your business into one that you love? It takes less effort to work with a business that you enjoy.

2. What business are you in?

Do you know what business you are in? I didn’t for a long time. I was in a multitude of businesses that kept me jumping around from one idea to another. It was a real headache! I had so many ideas that applied to different businesses. I wanted to do them all, but how would I find the time?

I finally figured out I couldn’t do everything. After all, I am only one person. I decided to focus on one goal, one business, and one idea. I would do my best to be successful. I am a programmer, graphic designer, multimedia developer, and website designer. I have had a lot of business experiences, good and bad.

I love working with computers and have over nine different domain names, each for a different business. My decision to eliminate most of these domains enabled me to stay focused. Working with one or two online businesses is manageable, more profitable, and a lot less of a headache! Before, if someone asked me, “What do you do?” I would reply, “I’m in computers,” and then I would think to myself, “What do I do?” Is it stock control programming and P.O.S. systems? Computer programming? Computer tutoring? Computer sales and repairs? Multimedia development ? Graphic design? Computer business consulting? Online business development? Website development? Information web sites?

I did all of these things at one time or another. The only thing I couldn’t do was concentrate. I started to apply the habit of focus.

I realized that I love to provide useful information in a simple, easy to understand language for as many people as possible. I could also implement my multimedia and graphic design talents by using the evolving computer technologies over the web.

Ever since I got my priorities straight and threw out all the other ideas, things just started working out. My friend, find what you want in your business. Throw out everything else, and focus! You’ll be amazed at what happens to you and your business.

3. Why are you in business?

Ask yourself, “Why am I in business?” If you don’t know, how can you stay motivated? Why do you come to work? What’s your purpose?

If you don’t know why you are in business, wouldn’t you be happier working for someone else, putting in your eight hours and coming home with nothing else to worry about? Find out why you are in business!

The following are some general questions that might bring some clarity to the main question: “Why are you in business?”

  • Do you want prestige?
  • Do you want to make your own hours?
  • Are you looking for freedom?
  • Is it that you love what you do?
  • Do you like being in control?
  • Are you providing a product or service you have developed?
  • Are you pursuing a dream?
4. What do you want from your business?

Ask yourself, “What do I want from my business?” When you know what you want, your subconscious mind will always be looking for and finding ways to direct you towards those goals. Again, the following are some general questions that might clarify the main question: “What do I want from my business?”

  • Do I want financial stability?
  • Do I want success?
  • Do I want publicity?
  • Do I want recognition?

The answers to the preceding four questions are an important step toward having a successful business. The above sample questions should help you develop your own specific questions and answers. After you know what you want in your business and why you want it, then focus on that aspect like a laser beam!

Exercise 1 – Reasons you are in business – Copy Paste Print and Fill In

Over the next couple of days, fill in the blanks. Completing this over a couple of days will give you plenty of time to think about why you are in business.

List the issues that drive you as well as the issues that make you feel good about being in business.

Start with the most important issues and move on to the least important. Be specific, don’t use general terms. The more specific you are, the more you will benefit from this list.

After filling in this worksheet, read it out loud to yourself every Monday, or whatever day of the week you prefer, for at least a couple of months. This process will transfer the thoughts into your subconscious mind.
