A Collection of Articles About Becoming An Automotive Mechanic
This post contains tips and advice related to a career in automotive repair from a variety of authors, each providing their own insights, but first, a few brief points to consider.
If you have an interest in cars and like to get your hands dirty, then a career as an auto mechanic may be a good move for you.
When I was a kid, cars were all I thought about. I loved looking at them, popping the hood to see the engines, looking underneath, and getting my hands dirty when an opportunity came up.
It was my passion in life. I majored in auto mechanics. I continued to work in the field for a few years then I lost interest because of three reasons:
1. Your hands and clothing are always dirty. I’m not saying you’re full of grease and grime but for example, if I’d leave the shop to go for lunch, my appearance would bother me.
2. Most of the time you are dealing with people’s problems, and if someone has expensive repairs, they wouldn’t be happy about it and I’d feel bad for them. So most people would be anxious when they came in because they were worried about expensive repairs and the status of their vehicles.
3. My passion went from automotive to computers. Naturally, this had nothing to do with the trade but was a personal choice.
If you‘re considering a career as an auto mechanic, work in the field for a bit to see if that’s what you want to do for the rest of your life. You may love it, you may not.
Going through an automotive apprenticeship will take a few years and with all the new technology related to today’s vehicles, you’ll always be learning. So you want to make sure this is what you want before investing the time and money to become a licensed auto mechanic.
Have a look at the resources I have included in this post that will give you a strong overview of a career as an auto mechanic.
