A Collection of Pages About Becoming A Juvenile Probation Officer
This page contains a collection of web pages I have selected to give you an overview of becoming a Juvenile Probation Officer, but first, a few brief points to keep in mind.
If you think you can make a difference in young people’s lives and think you can work with troubled youths, then a career as a juvenile probation office may be a career option for you.
Juvenile Probation Officers may be required to perform some of the following tasks:
- Training programs.
- Prepare documents and ensure accurate record-keeping.
- Motivational exercises.
- Working with surveillance officers to supervise offenders.
- Participate in family discussions.
- Deal With Behavioral Issues.
- Ensure youths follow terms set by the court.
- Provide recommendations to the judge.
- Investigating cases.
- Interviewing parents, guardians, lawyers, etc.
- Schedule drug tests.
- Ensure counseling in areas such as drug abuse, anger management, and social skills.
- Provide crisis intervention.
- Creating and optimize rehabilitation plans.
Skills That Are A Plus As A Juvenile Probation Officer:
- The ability to deal with diverse cultures.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to connect with others.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Being detail-oriented.
- Excellent Problem-solving skills.
You’ll be more effective if you have empathy and your focus is on rehabilitation and doing what you can to guide the young offenders. Looking at this career as, “just a job,” won’t do you any good nor will it do anything for the people you’re working with.
Looking at this career as making a change in the lives of these young people and helping them get a second chance in life, will help you succeed and get results that will affect the people you’re working with and help improve our society.
One important part about choosing a career is, you want to find the right fit for you. The worst thing you can do in my opinion is to take a job, “Just for the money,” because unless you fall in love with your work you’ll be miserable.
Your work must be enjoyable in order to make an impact and contribution. Keep in mind a third of your day is at work and if you’re miserable during those eight hours your mood will spill into your personal life. All being said if you have an option to choose a career, choose the one you have a passion for.
One way to find out if you like the work you’re about to get into is to see if you can shadow or interview someone that is already working in the field. Doing so will give you a taste of what you’re in for before you invest time money and effort into a career only to find it’s not the right one for you.
If you do find someone that’s willing to show you the ropes, make sure you prepare a list of questions beforehand so you get the most out of your time with and by preparing ahead of time you won’t waste their time.
