A career as a sales representative can be exciting and keep you busy. It’s a fast-paced career with potential, but it does require a lot of skill and knowledge.
You are considered working in sales whether you are selling million-dollar homes; or selling a two-dollar item. That being said, are all people in sales always successful? Absolutely not. It takes a lot of work, effort, knowledge, and outstanding people skills!

1. Is This The Right Career For You?
With any career your considering, you need to choose one that is the right fit. Choose a career that interests you. When you have a passion for what you’re doing, you’ll have the drive and energy to succeed. For example, if you choose a career for the wrong reasons, like just for the money or title, you may not succeed. Your life could be miserable because you’re doing something you don’t like.
Imagine becoming a doctor with great earning potential and prestige. Still, you hate biology, and you get knots in your stomach when you think of dealing with people’s health problems. How successful do you think you’ll be as a doctor? My guess, you’ll struggle to get your degree. You’ll hate your work, and you’ll be miserable, wondering why you ever picked this career.
It’s important to choose a career you’re passionate about, something you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life.
Think of something you would do for free if you had all the money you would ever need. Once you identify that, that’s the path you should take.
2. A Tip That Can Change The Way You Make Sales and Change Your Career!
Whenever I hear terms like sales reps and success, I hear quota, sales targets, and percentages. I’m going to share my views, which look at sales quota a bit differently.
In this career, you’ll have a certain amount of sales you have to make to reach your yearly quota. When you focus on that alone, you may become obsessed with that aspect of the job and make it a habit to push the sale.
My perspective is you need to look at what your job is.
Your job is to match the right product or service to the right customer. If you do this for a few months or years, you could become a superstar sales rep, and instead of looking for prospects, they will come to you. Because you’re not looking for the sale, you’re looking to make the right match.
Here’s an example.
Let’s say you’re a real estate agent, and you have a lead for a high-end home that you need to sell to meet your sales quota.
After showing the house to a couple, they want the house and are ready to make an offer.
As you’re doing the paperwork, you get to the financing section, realize this couple can’t make the monthly payments. In time, they may lose this home. Their dream home will be their worst mistake. What do you do?
You may be able to get them approved through a high-risk mortgage company. Make the sale, make the commission, and reach your quota. You can let them deal with whatever happens, after all, it’s their decision, who am I to tell them what they can afford.
You could help “them to see what they are doing” and the problems ahead. Don’t tell the couple, you can’t afford it, do it so that they realize they can’t afford it.
For example, go over the mortgage payment, insurance, and other monthly costs. Once they see it, then you offer an alternative house that they can afford.
When you have this type of thinking, you’re looking out for your client’s best interest before your own. A sales rep might say, “You had a good lead and let it go, if you do this all the time, your sales levels will drop significantly.”
But let’s consider the above example. What you have done is put this client in a house that they can afford and closed the deal with a happy client. The couple is comfortable with the way you handled things, not because you told them what to do, but because you helped them see it on their own. Now they will probably refer you to anyone they know that needs an agent.
You still have the listing for the high-end home, and you’ll probably sell it to the right person. So, you can make two sales compared to the one sale you would have made.
Use this type of thinking for every client, and in time, people will be looking for you to sell them a house because of the way you treat clients, which matches the right person to a home that is a great fit!
