A Unique Collection of Resources You’ll Need To Become a UX Consultant
Working in this field, you’ll be improving the usability of applications. When you focus on the end-user, then your perspective changes from the best way to develop an application asking questions like,
“How the user will interact with this application.”, “How can I make this user-friendly?”
Naturally, an excellent user interface for an application is one of the main keys to attracting users to the application. Think of it this way — let’s use a phone app as an example.
I’m going to use an Imaginary idea for an app. The app keeps you from impulse buying by monitoring your heart rate whenever you are making a purchase using your phone. If you become anxious when using your phone to pay, you’ll get a message telling you it denies your funds for this purchase. Then, you have to enter in the phrase “Override this purchase” to pay for the purchase.
It’s a simple idea, but let’s say for the app to work, you have to connect a wire to your hand, and you have to be connected to Wi-Fi, and to get report trends you have to export to an Excel file, would be a failure for an idea that could be very successful.
As a UX consultant, you would eliminate the wire, because the phone has the heart rate function built-in. You would use data instead of Wi-Fi, and the app would generate a report and give you a high-five when you are improving. Now, the idea may be accepted, because it’s usable.
This career can be interesting. You’re always improving something. Some changes will be drastic, some simple, and some may cause you to start over.
Whenever choosing a career, use the “try before you buy” approach. You can do this by shadowing a UX consultant if that option is available. Even interviewing one can be beneficial. A third option is to volunteer to get an idea of what you’re getting into. The point is to expose yourself to the job environment as much as possible before committing.
