Michael Feuer and Robert Hurwitz Feuer came up with the concept of OfficeMax in the late ’80s. It all started as a simple idea, and in about five years, it blossomed to become the third-highest in the American business supplies industry.
At the age of 42, Feuer was an executive at the Fabri-centers of America, which is 600-store retail located in Cleveland. But he wasn’t comfortable being just an executive. That was when he decided to start his enterprise. Feuer turned down so many job offers and didn’t have money to fund the enterprise. But he and Robert struggled to raise money from friends and family to start the operation.
OfficeMax started with just seven workers, and the requirement as at then was only to be hardworking and have an enthusiastic spirit. After 90 days of creating their business blueprint, OfficeMax incredibly opened its first store, which left many people stunned. In the next 6months, OfficeMax broke even, and it was a great feat.
In less than 12 months after opening the first store, OfficeMax had 13 stores in Ohio, and the sales had risen aggressively to $13 million annually.
As of 1994, OfficeMax was successfully operating in 40 states, including Puerto Rico, and had a total of 388 stores. In this same year, OfficeMax made the highest IPO ever in the history of industries by launching online OfficeMax, CopyMax, and FurnitureMax
In 1995 OfficeMax posted more than $2 billion sales, and this was despite the recession that started in the late 1980s. OfficeMax rose rapidly above its competitors because of its savvy marketing and financial strategies.
In November 2013, OfficeMax merged with Office depot to form the largest office supply chain in the United States.
Looking at the bigger picture, OfficeMax has grown to be a very reputable brand in the industry today. Their mission is straightforward. OfficeMax supplies in-store print, technology products, and solutions, document services, furniture, paper, and office supplies to individuals and businesses. It doesn’t end there
Customers rarely have a cause to complain because they are attended to by over 30,000 through e-commerce, direct sales, and catalogs. OfficeMax has over 1,000 stores in the United States; all you have to do is find the stores closest to you and get the supplies you need.
