The need for a cab on a cold winter night in 2008, lead to the idea for a new company that would earn a revenue of over 11 billion in revenue in 2018. Travis Kalanick and Garrett founded Uber in San Francisco in 2009.
Both men had previous experience in internet-based companies. Travis Kalanick co-founded Red Swoosh and later sold it to Akamai Technologies for $19 million. Garrett Camp sold StumbleUpon (MIX) to eBay (EBAY) for $75 million.
A ride-sharing concept that took off! People using their own vehicles to drive people to their destination whenever they have free time, to make some extra money. Uber makes the connection between the customer and the driver and takes a fee for the connection. Uber drivers do need to get certified by the company before they can accept any Uber customer.
The company concept is expanding into delivering fast food called Uber Eats, and other endeavors such as Uber for business, Uber elevate, which is a concept related to flight, and Uber Freight.
Uber’s revenue for 2018 was $11.3 billion, which is up 43 percent from 2017. The company is still working towards profitability, It’s still showing a loss and in 2018 even though Uber had a record year in revenue, profitability was at a loss of 1.8 billion, which is a slight improvement of the previous year of a loss of over two billion dollars.
There are hundreds of thousands of sign-ups every month for drivers wanting to participate. Drivers are classified as Pros, Crossovers, New Enthusiasts, and Part-Timers. The majority of drivers said their main reason for driving for Uber was they wanted to be their own boss and have their own schedule.
