Walmart started in 1962 in Rogers Arkansas by Sam Walton, he had a degree in economics and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1940. It’s interesting to note that he entered a management training program at J.C. Penney in Des Moines, Iowa.

Sam set up his stores in rural areas to avoid competition by larger chains and this would also discourage new competition from starting a business in the area, he believed the customer deserves the best variety and best value available. His ideas have made Walmart a retail giant and the largest retailer in the world today.

Walmart is known for its low prices and a wide variety of everyday products. Because of its success, Walmart has put a lot of mom and pop shops out of business because they can’t compete on price or variety.
