Walmart started in 1962 in Rogers Arkansas by Sam Walton, he had a degree in economics and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1940. It’s interesting to note that he entered a management training program at J.C. Penney in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sam set up his stores in rural areas to avoid competition by larger chains and this would also discourage new competition from starting a business in the area, he believed the customer deserves the best variety and best value available. His ideas have made Walmart a retail giant and the largest retailer in the world today.

As the world’s largest retailer, over 37 million people shop there every day. Walmart’s profit is over 1.8 million per hour, and over 140,000 items are offered in the supercenters. It outranks Target, Costco, and Kroger combined for retail sales and employs over 2.2 million employees.
