The Elements of a Balanced Life

Achieving a Balanced Lifestyle Is Achievable if You Really Want It

When you’re working your hardest to become successful, you could be sacrificing your family life, the activities you enjoy, your health, and your relationships. Think about it, if we put 100% of our energy, creativity, and time we have into work, what’s leftover for the other stuff? Nothing.

Here’s an example:

Jacky is a CPA, and she puts 100% of everything she has towards her career and making partner in the accounting firm where she works. After five years of slaving over her career and allowing nothing to stand in her way, she finally did it! She became the success she dreamed of. On the day of her becoming a partner, she decided to treat herself to a celebration dinner.

Alone she sat in the restaurant waiting for her meal. She suddenly came to the alarming realization and asked herself, why am I alone during this celebration? The stark reality hit her; I have been so busy, I have lost touch with all my friends, and she thought to herself that this is a sad state of affairs.

As she pondered more over her situation, she realized she hadn’t been out with friends in five years and had even neglected her family. Looking away to hide a tear, she saw herself in the restaurant mirror and what she saw was a very stressed person. It seemed to her she had aged more than ten years in that short period of time.

Even though Jacky has achieved her goal and became a partner in her firm, it was a bittersweet victory because during her five-year journey she didn’t have a balanced life.

Without a Balanced Life Success Is Meaningless

Without a balanced life—even though you are successful—you’ll find areas in your life that are empty and you’ll miss a lot of the vital elements that make life worth living!

A lot of people devote all their time and energy to their work. They even borrow from other parts of their life to obtain a goal only to find themselves in a similar situation like Jacky.

Reaching a balanced life isn’t easy. I can share examples of what I find to be important for a balanced life.

For me, the elements of a balanced life include the following:

Spirituality

My faith is important because without God in my life, the rest of the issues have no balance and lose all sense. My priorities are God first, family second, work third, friends fourth, and health fifth.

For me, God comes first. Does that mean I drop everything and live at church? Do I stand on the corner of the street and hold up a sign telling you to repent? The end is near! No, that stuff turns me off. The way I look at it—God is the creator. And I try to base my decisions and live my life as if God was watching. My views are if you can’t trust God, who can you trust?

Family

Yes, in the previous paragraph, I put God before my family, because I know he will take better care of them than I could ever do on my own. Family is one of the most important parts of my life, and it is part of reaching a balance in life. Your family has a strong influence and impact on the person you are today.

Relationships and Socializing

You’re born into your family, but you’re free to choose your friends. Friends and socializing can help you reach a balanced life. We all need to be around people that we want to associate. It keeps us sane and allows us to relax and socialize without any expectations—just a time to slow down and unwind and have some fun with the people you appreciate.

Work

Work is something that can give you a sense of accomplishment, something you can be proud of. It’s something that allows you to use your creativity and contribute to the world we live in—no matter how important your job is—you are contributing to making the world a better place.

Health

Without your health, you won’t have much of a family, work, or social life. It’s important to take care of yourself. You only have one body and one life. Health is last on my list. For others, it may be closer to the top of the list. I have neglected to put any effort into this area of my life, probably because I have been blessed with good health all my life. I’m grateful for my good health. Even though your health is good, you still need to take care of yourself.

Life Balance Is Unique

I have shared my views with you on how I see life balance.

Your perspectives around life balance could be different, and that’s okay. And that’s the exact point of writing about my views. When it comes to life balance, in my opinion, there are no rules set in stone. You do, however, need to balance your life with the issues that are most important to you.

Maybe you’re not spiritual; perhaps you live far from your family or whatever your situation is. You need to balance your life with the work you do, the people you associate with, and every aspect you feel is overlooked.
