The 9 Hour Small Business Tune-Up
Hour 5

Without a clear plan, you will always have questions in the back of your mind concerning certain elements of our business.

This section will help you answer those questions because upon completing it you will have developed a business map—a precious tool that will provide you with focus and the ability to work with passion and effectiveness.

As a city develops, events occur such as road construction. The city’s map changes accordingly. One thing that doesn’t usually change is the terrain. For our purposes, the “roads” are the direction your business is taking and “the terrain” refers to your core business. Having your business map at your side gives you security and allows you to refer to it any time you feel you’re getting lost or off track.

Mission Statement:

Your mission statement is a powerful tool to help you maintain the direction that you originally intended for your business. You should be proud of your statement, and it should be clear, stating your roles, goals, mission, and purpose.

Your mission statement must be shared with all those who are associated with your business, and everyone should participate in its implementation. Therefore, your mission statement should be posted where everyone can see it, including your employees, customers, and suppliers.

Some Tips to Keep in Mind While Writing Your Mission Statement:

  • Keep it clear, specific, and to the point.
  • Think of your business venture as a journey, and when writing your mission statement know the destination of that journey.
  • Include any long-term goals that you have.
  • Provide direction for your business.
  • Include its benefits to your clients, employees, and suppliers.
  • State the purpose of your business.

Exercise 1: Write Your Mission Statement Below:

Developing Your USP:

Your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) should be a statement that describes why a customer should do business with you than with the completion. Your USP should be printed out and practiced by you and anyone else involved in your business, including employees and suppliers. If your USP is not practiced, it’s worthless. Your customers have to believe that your USP is real.

Your USP must be specific, clear, and compelling. Remember, your USP is the reason a customer does business with you and it’s a statement that gives you a distinct advantage in your industry.

After completing the first draft of your USP, look at it from the competitions’ point of view. Can they challenge it? If so, what part would they challenge? Write a new draft that addresses this challenge.

If you haven’t completed the section on studying your competition, it is advised you do that first as it will help you to develop your USP. If you have completed that section, print a copy of it so you can refer to it.

Exercise 2: Creating Your USP:

1. Brainstorm and come up with at least 20 good points about your business. (For more information on brainstorming, go to the section entitled Start Here.)

2. Choose the three most important points that make your business special.

3. Write a short, clear, compelling statement that includes the three points you chose above.
