Part 1 of Acey Gaspard’s Guide to Starting a Small Business – Made Simple
Starting Your Own Business
So you’re considering getting into your own business. That’s great, and this could change your life forever and help you live the lifestyle you’ve always wanted.
It may allow you to do more of the things you want and have more control over your life. Being in your own business can truly be an enriching experience; just make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.
The purpose of this article is to help you get into business for the right reasons. When you know what you want, you’ll have a much better chance of getting it.
Let’s Look at Johnny’s Story
Johnny worked in an automotive detailing shop, and he was very good at it. The cars he worked on turned out like cars in the showroom. What he didn’t like was being told what to do when it came to detailing the cars. The business owner focused on profits instead of service and usually made Johnny cut corners during the detailing process.
One day, Johnny had enough. He knew he could do a better job detailing cars his way, and he decided to open up his own shop. He walked into the boss’s office, told him he was quitting, and walked out, not even giving the boss a chance to ask what the problem was. Within three weeks, Johnny was in business for himself.
In the first few weeks, Johnny found himself taking care of many tasks he wasn’t familiar with. Soon he was working extra-long hours, and he still didn’t have the time to do what he was good at, which was detailing cars. Johnny found himself in the world of business, and he didn’t like it.
After only a few weeks of this, he gave up. Johnny was finished before he even got started. You see, he never really wanted to run a business; he wanted to detail the cars. That was his passion, which he did best, and that was all he wanted to do. He got into business for the wrong reasons.
Now Johnny is worse off than when he started, broke, unemployed, and his spirits are down.
Don’t Let What Happened to Johnny Happen to You
Get into business for the right reasons. Johnny hated every aspect of running a business, and that’s why he gave up and failed.
He would have been better off making an agreement with his employer to give him more control in the detailing process. We’re all happy doing what’s important to us. The thing we could do all day even if we didn’t get paid for it. When you’re considering a business, it should be something you’re happy doing.
Don’t run away from a problem; run toward a desire. Once you’ve found your true desire and you’re in a working environment that’s right for you, you’ll perform better, your work will be enjoyable, and you’ll be good at what you do.
The reasons for running your own business are personal and plentiful. Whatever reason, you won’t find success if you’re running from a problem.
Popular Reasons to Start a Business
To Be in Control
Some people are born to run the show. They may be in a job where they can’t control anything. For example, they may have a better way of performing a certain task, but because they are an employee and have no control, they must follow the procedure without modifications. Some people won’t care, but it’s hard for those who want to be in control.
For those who want to be in control and good, it is one reason people look to start a business.
To Have More Freedom
Some people like to work their own hours and take time off when they want. Some businesses may allow you to work your own hours, for example, a graphic design business. Others need around-the-clock attention, for example, a convenience store. Keep in mind some businesses don’t offer less freedom than a job.
To Create Something Special
Creating a product or service that you would like to offer to the public is a common reason people start a business.
Developing something new that is accepted in the marketplace is not something easy to do. It’s good practice to see if people want what you’re offering before investing too much of your time and money.
To Feel Successful
Seeing yourself as a successful business owner is one reason someone would be interested in starting a business. There is nothing wrong with wanting to feel successful. Remember, to become successful in a business takes a lot of time and effort. Becoming an overnight success is rarely something that happens.
To Gain Recognition
Some people need to gain recognition and feel prestigious in their community, which is one more reason some people may be inclined to get into a business. Although I doubt it is the sole purpose of starting a business, it is merely a contributing factor.
To Feel a Sense of Accomplishment
What am I doing with my life? It is a question many people have, especially when they start to get older. They look back at their lives and think I haven’t done anything with my life.
Starting and running a successful business gives some people a sense of purpose, and it’s one reason some people get into their own business.
To Improve Their Financial Situation
Improving one’s finances is one of the more popular reasons people will consider starting their own business and is one of the main reasons.
By definition, the purpose of a business is to make money. I feel it’s more than just making money. It’s about lifestyle providing value to the marketplace, and in my opinion, most important, it is following a passion.
To Build a Better Future
Many people will think about their distant future, looking towards 20 or 30 years down the road. They see they are in a job that isn’t much of a career and want to start a business.
The financial growth and stability of owning a successful business attract people who want to build a future while doing something they like.
To Be The Boss
Being the boss is one of the more popular reasons for starting your own business. Like what we talked about above about being in control, being the boss is appealing to many people, especially those organized and confident to run a business.
I Can Do Better
Some people have worked in an industry for many years and gained knowledge and experience. They notice how the company they work in is managed and think they can do a lot better. Thinking they can build a better company is a popular reason people go out and start their own business.
